What it is
When you take a picture of a scene, you can get a very different sense of space depending on the camera setup or the lens. This becomes a problem when you book a hotel room and then realise the room is not as big as it looked in the picture. And it becomes a bigger issue when you are paying for an expensive room at a well-known hotel.
This project solves that, through VR, your smartphone or your browser. You can walk and look around the room you are interested in, get the sense of the space, and immediately know the layout without shuffling a list of images back and forth.
The problem
Communication, time zones, realism and performance were the main challenges we encountered. The project involved people from across the world: Indonesia, the Czech Republic, Russia, India and more. Maintaining updates, distributing the project files and aligning deadlines can be challenging when you work with people remotely in different time zones. Besides that, we had to make sure what we shipped was as light as possible while keeping the realism and the accuracy.
What I did
I initially worked as a 3D artist, but because of my knowledge of game engines and the technical side, 3D art was no longer my only responsibility. My role became 3D Artist / Unity Specialist.
In every project I started by helping the lead 3D artist list the assets the team needed to create, and reviewing whether any of them should be treated differently. Then I moved on to the 3D assets assigned to me. Once those were done I went into Unity: assembling the assets the team had made, setting up lighting and occlusion culling, baking the lightmaps, and so on, until the project passed the requirements and could go back to the team outside Indonesia.
Outside of that I also worked closely with the COO, the manager, the lead 3D artist and the lead developer to discuss how the projects were developing. Giving my input on what would and would not work, where the limitations were, and more.

Outcome
In a relatively short time we finished multiple projects for well-known five-star hotels around the world, including InterContinental Paris and JW Marriott Dubai.
