What it is
In the first two years of my career I was involved in developing several projects: a wargaming simulator, an F-16 simulator and a driving simulator.
The driving simulator was built to help the Indonesian Traffic Police measure a citizen's driving aptitude while also educating them, combining a motion platform, an actual car dashboard, a wide viewing angle and realistic simulation software.
The problem
We used three large high-resolution screens and a real car dashboard to mimic the wide viewing angle and the actual interior. That translated into the challenge of how we set up the cameras, and of running at a high frame rate while keeping the visuals immersive.
What I did
I took the role of lead of the visual team. Inside the team I distributed the tasks across the members, set the spec limit for each asset, reviewed them and made sure they worked properly in the engine, while also working on the engine side: post-processing, optimisation and integration.
Outside my own team I worked closely with the lead developer and the lead engineer, taking part in the R&D stage to make sure everything was aligned and worked as intended.
Outcome
Even before the product actually shipped, the Indonesian Traffic Police had already visited us several times to try it, and the reviews were good. I left the company before the final delivery, so how it landed after that is not something I can speak to.
